A staggering announcement has just shaken the planetary science community. Astronomers using the ALMA and James Clerk Maxwell telescopes have detected the spectral signature of phosphine gas deep within the thick, acidic clouds of our closest planetary neighbour, Venus.

On Earth, phosphine is primarily produced by anaerobic microbes. While this is absolutely not definitive proof of life—it could very well be an unknown, exotic geochemical process—it is an incredibly tantalising biosignature. It immediately shifts the focus back to Venus, a world often ignored in favour of Mars, suggesting the temperate cloud decks high above its hellish surface might warrant a much closer look.
