Today is a deeply sad day for science. Professor Stephen Hawking has passed away at the age of 76.

His contributions to theoretical physics, particularly regarding black holes and the nature of time, fundamentally changed how we view the universe. But perhaps his greatest legacy is his unparalleled ability to communicate complex cosmological concepts to the public. 'A Brief History of Time' inspired an entire generation to look up and wonder about the bizarre, beautiful mechanics of the cosmos. I remember reading it many years ago and being entirely captivated by it's story.

Stephen Hawking defied his devastating medical diagnosis for decades, demonstrating an indomitable will and a brilliant sense of humour. He leaves behind an intellectual void that will be incredibly hard to fill, but his ideas will live on as long as humanity continues to study the stars and the cosmos in which they burn.
