We have a new king of the planetary moons! Astronomers have just announced the discovery of 12 previously unknown moons orbiting Jupiter, bringing the gas giant's total tally up to a staggering 92.
This discovery officially pushes Jupiter past Saturn (which currently sits at 83 known moons) to reclaim the title for the most moons in the solar system. These newly discovered satellites are tiny, dark, and incredibly difficult to spot, sitting in distant, retrograde orbits. It just goes to show that even in our own local cosmic neighbourhood, there is still so much we haven't mapped.
