Millions of people across Mexico, the United States, and Canada were treated to a spectacular total solar eclipse yesterday. The path of totality swept right across the continent, plunging major cities into midday darkness.
Watching the streams and seeing the photographs flood in today brings back such vivid, emotional memories of my own eclipse trip to Hao Atoll in 2010.
The solar maximum is currently approaching its peak, and many observers noted incredibly bright, ruby-red prominences leaping from the solar limb, visible even to the naked eye during totality. It is wonderful to see so much of the general public completely captivated by the clockwork beauty of the cosmos.
